More Than Luck: How To Land Your First Job Interview

So, you’re looking to start your career by landing your first dream job. You have been browsing through the internet trying to find good jobs and land your first interview. We understand that a job interview is your chance to convince employers that you can bring value to the table. You are young, full of energy, and are willing to learn new stuff.

However, you are finding it hard to land your first job interview, especially with a company you’ve always wanted to work for. It’s hard to do so because you don’t have experience and you can’t show your talent with a generic resume

Just remember one thing, everyone starts from zero. And if you think people get success by luck, think again. Since we can’t do anything about luck, let’s focus on things that ensure success. In this post, we’re going to share some tips to help you land that job interview. Let’s get down to it:

  • Do some homework

First of all, make sure you meet the major job requirements. Read the job descriptions carefully to determine your eligibility. If you have all the skills and you’re confident that you would be able to perform well at the job, start working on other important aspects.

In case you’re still searching for a job, devote some time, energy, and full commitment. It is recommended to have a proper plan and follow it. You should avoid distractions and temptations when it comes to pursuing your career goals. Allocate a specific amount of time to search jobs online, respond to the listings, and browse through social media to join different communities of professionals.

Enter the job title you are after into Google to find out different aspects of that job. Get yourself familiar with what will be asked of you.

  • Tailor your resume to the job description

It’s not a good practice to have a generic resume and use it for every job. Since this is going to be your first job interview, create a perfect resume in a way that the most relevant and important information gets instantly noticed by the recruiter. Remember, hiring managers spend an average of 5 seconds going through a job application. This means you don’t have too much time making a great impression. Therefore, it’s important to build a catchy resume

Also, make sure to create an ATS-friendly resume to make sure it doesn’t end up rejected before it is seen by a human eye. Studies show that up to 75% of qualified applicants are rejected by ATS programs because they don’t reach recruiters.

Therefore, it’s critical to spend some time on your resume to get it read by a potential employer. This is probably the most crucial step when it comes to unlocking the door to a job interview. To avoid an ATS rejection, put your most significant and relevant achievements in the spotlight. An ATS scans for specific keywords to determine whether or not an application should pass through to the recruiter. Here are some quick tips to create an excellent resume:

  • Select the right file type for your resume. Sending your resume in PDF might be a good idea. However, make sure it checks the list of file formats you can use to submit your application
  • Optimize your resume with keywords. Analyze the job description to find the frequently used or important words.
  • Use a clean resume design with a clear hierarchy to enable recruiters to quickly scan through your information.
  • Give your resume a creative, descriptive title to improve your chances of getting noticed.

  •  Know the person you are applying to

Your job application needs to reach the right inbox. Sending your application to the email address mentioned in the job post is a must, but there is something else you can do to make your presence felt.

For example, you can do some research on your hiring manager and send them a direct email. If you don’t have the direct work email address of the hiring manager, you can simply find and visit their Linkedin profile to find that information.

Once you have that information, use that email as the primary recipient and the given email address as the secondary recipient. However, make sure not to send emails on personal email accounts or make a call. Showing up at someone’s doorstep is a bad idea.

  • Act Fast

So, you have created a great resume and the contact email of the hiring authority. Now it’s time to do get started with submitting your application. Start with crafting a nice introductory email explaining why you’re interested in the job and how you would contribute to the company’s success with your talent. Be sure to act fast: don’t overthink. You can spend a couple of days developing your case, but the sooner the better.

After you email the job application, wait for a couple of days. If you don’t hear back from the company, feel free to pick up the phone and request to speak with the hiring manager. Ask them whether or not they have received your application email

If there’s a company you have been waiting and dreaming to work with and they don’t have a job opening, stop waiting. Do some research to know the hiring manager or whoever is in charge. Email them a tailored resume to a position you want.
